WEKUME #protectyourself

Wekume was born from a deeply personal place. Our founder, Joshua Walusimbi, lost his older sister while she was a university student in Uganda. Like many young people, she entered adulthood without the tools or support to navigate her sexual and reproductive health. She contracted HIV, became pregnant, and passed away before she could reach her dreams.

Years later, when Joshua entered university, he saw the same patterns repeating. Friends were struggling with preventable SRH complications—unintended pregnancies, STIs, mental health crises—all in silence. There was no safe, stigma-free space to ask questions or seek support.

Joshua had been fortunate. As a teenager, he was introduced to sexual health education through his church. That knowledge empowered him to make informed choices and avoid the hardships so many of his peers were facing. He knew things had to change.

That’s why he founded Wekume, a youth-led initiative and digital platform that empowers university students to take control of their sexual and reproductive health with confidence, dignity, and support.

Through features like SafeChat, QuickTest, and our Circumcision appointment scheduler, Wekume offers students discreet, trusted access to professional help and resources.

Our name, Wekume, means “Protect Yourself.” That’s our mission—and our promise.

Health Education and Awareness:

Our platform offers reliable, up-to-date information on sexual and reproductive health through engaging Health Tips and educational resources. We aim to combat misinformation and empower students to make informed choices.

Stay Healthy:

While we are NOT health care professionals our goal is to help students stay proactive about their health.

Business Development and Entrepreneurship Support: Wekume also aims to be an incubator for student entrepreneurs by providing mentorship, workshops, and fundraising resources to help young people develop business ideas, pilot projects, and build sustainable enterprises.

Exchange Programs and Internships: We dream of facilitating exchange programs within Uganda, giving students the opportunity to explore different regions, gain diverse perspectives, and grow personally. Additionally, we intend to connect students with internship and volunteering opportunities, helping them gain valuable work experience and practical skills.

Inclusivity and Support for Minority Groups: Wekume is committed to inclusivity, ensuring our resources are accessible to marginalized student groups, such as refugees. Our platform tailors services to support these groups, providing a safe, inclusive space for everyone.
